Why These Picks?

DET Tigers v KC Royals: I know the Tigers were on a heater there for a while and then cooled right off over their last 6 games, but I’m not in the business of betting against Detroit starter Troy Melton (1.71 ERA). The Tigers actually lost the game that Melton last started and he still only allowed a single run in the 4 innings that he did pitch; 4 of his last 5 starts have resulted in a win for Detroit. As for Kansas City, I don’t hate Noah Cameron (4.16 ERA) at home, but Melton is by far the better arm and the Tigers have a much stronger offense. My money’s on the visitors to bag a win here.

WAS Nationals v MIA Marlins: I’m surprised this line is set so low. With the Nationals being one of the better offenses in MLB and Miami starter Ryan Gusto (4.70 ERA) being 0-3, I don’t think this game will have a tough time getting to 8 runs. In addition, Washington is rolling with their bullpen today. I know that the Marlins had a tough time with Philly, but I think their offense will be able to turn up here. I’m on the Over to hit.

I don’t love Mariners starter George Kirby (3.89 ERA) away from home…the man has allowed 12 runs over his last 2 road games, and both were against far lesser offenses than Milwaukee’s. As for the Brewers pitching situation this afternoon, 4 of starter Robert Gasser’s (4.54 ERA) last 5 outings have resulted in a Milwaukee win. And hell, Gasser hasn’t allowed 12 runs across his last 5 games (let alone his last 2!) My money’s on the home squad to cover the RL, friends.

Good Canadian kid Matt  Wilkinson is getting called up to pitch for the SF Giants this afternoon, but I just can’t bet against the Guardians in this spot. Cleveland starter Parker Messick (2.59 ERA) is a beast and hasn’t allowed more than 2 runs in any of his last 5 outings. And, in the event that Wilkinson does pitch a great game, I just don’t think he’ll get the run support he needs from the Giants’ offense to bag the win. I’m on the home squad to cover the RL this evening.

MIA Marlins v PHI Phillies: I don’t like Aaron Nola at home…or on the road, ha ha! But the math doesn’t lie here – Nola is 0-4 in Philly, and the Marlins offense has been great this season. In addition, Miami starter Sandy Alcantara has only allowed a single run across his last 4 starts. Give me the Marlins to pull off the upset.
